Three Nigerian universities have jointly taken the top position in the Times Higher Education (THE) Nigeria University Rankings 2027, with the country recording 29 universities in the global ranking.
Covenant University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos were jointly ranked first among Nigerian universities. All three institutions were placed in the 801–1000 band globally, with an overall score range of 36.4–40.1.
They were followed by Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University, Landmark University and the University of Ilorin, which jointly occupied second place in Nigeria and were placed in the 1001–1200 global band.
Other Nigerian universities featured include Babcock University, Osun State University, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Federal University of Technology Minna, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Benin, University of Jos and University of Maiduguri.
The 2027 ranking represents an increase in Nigeria's presence on the global table, with 29 Nigerian universities featured—five more than in last year's ranking.
THE says its assessment considers areas including teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook, using 17 performance indicators across the five broad areas.
Among the institutions, the University of Ilorin and Bayero University recorded notably strong scores in the Research Quality pillar, which assesses a university's role in creating and spreading new knowledge and ideas.
The ranking also places the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, among the Nigerian institutions featured globally, while several federal and state universities appear alongside private institutions.
THE advises prospective students to consider factors such as programme offerings, research opportunities, campus facilities and industry collaborations when choosing a university, noting that institutions may have different strengths across these areas.
