Weeks into the new academic session, the Federal Ministry of Education has released the final list of ranked and approved textbooks for Nigerian schools for 2026–2028. The approved textbooks, covering Primary 1, Primary 4, JSS 1 and SS 1 in the first phase, now carry unique QR/Ranking Tracking Codes for identification and monitoring.

Federal Ministry of Education releases final 2026–2028 list for four class levels, introduces QR tracking codes
The Federal Ministry of Education has released the final list of ranked and approved textbooks for use in Nigerian schools for the 2026–2028 period, weeks after the commencement of the new academic session.
The list was released on Monday, September 28, 2026, following the completion of the first phase of the Federal Government’s national textbook ranking exercise.
The approved textbooks in this first phase are for four class levels:
Primary 1
Primary 4
Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS 1)
Senior Secondary School 1 (SS 1)
The Federal Ministry of Education said each approved textbook has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code, alongside details such as the title of the book, author or authors, publisher and year of publication.
According to the Ministry, the QR-based tracking system is intended to make it easier to identify and monitor approved instructional materials and strengthen accountability in their selection, procurement and use across schools.
Why the release took time
The Ministry explained that the process of generating and assigning unique tracking codes to every ranked textbook added to the time required to complete and validate the final approved list.
The ranking exercise is being conducted in phases, rather than covering every class level at once.
Second phase to cover four more classes
Following the completion of the first phase, the Ministry said preparations will begin for the second round of the exercise.
The second phase will cover textbooks for:
Primary 2
Primary 5
JSS 2
SS 2
The Ministry said the same identification and tracking measures will be applied to textbooks approved under the subsequent phase.
What this means for schools and parents
The Federal Ministry of Education has urged publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other relevant stakeholders to consult the official approved list when selecting and procuring textbooks for the affected classes.
Schools are also being encouraged to adhere to the approved list when providing and using textbooks for the specified classes.
The Ministry said the exercise is part of its efforts to ensure that teachers and learners have access to quality, relevant and curriculum-aligned instructional materials, while improving transparency and accountability in textbook provision.
The complete 2026–2028 Ranked and Approved Textbooks list, including the unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code assigned to each approved title, has been released by the Federal Ministry of Education.
Parents, teachers and school owners can check the official list before purchasing or recommending textbooks for the affected classes.
